Yaounde: UK, Cameroon celebrate bilateral relations at King Charles’ 76th Birthday

The British High Commission in Cameroon as an annual tradition hosted a gala dinner to celebrate King Charles III’s 76th birthday at the British residence in Bastos, Yaounde.

The event brought together Government ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, distinguished academics, media, civil society, and business leaders on Thursday, November 21, 2024.

The Members of the government were led by the Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations, Felix Mbayu.

The British High Commissioner to Cameroon, Matt Woods in his opening remarks highlighted that the King’s birthday was a special moment for the British people around the world.

“The Monarchy is a very important part of our identity, our national identity… its lovely to see so many people here tonight” the High Commissioner said.

He pointed out that the bilateral relationship between London and Yaounde has grown to new dimensions spanning sectors such as trade, defence, the fight against climate change and the preservation of Cameroon’s remarkable diversity, emphasizing that the ties were broad, deep and historic.

The guest had the opportunity to enjoy diverse catering options with classic British roast dinner and Cameroonian cuisine, reflecting the broad diversity of Britain.

The event was also an avenue to reinforce partnerships between the UK and Cameroon with various British companies like Diageo, Standard Chattered, Savannah Energy, Oriole Resources and Globeleq among others showcasing their products and services.

Guests celebrating King Charles’ Birthday anniversary

It is important to note that the King like his late mother Queen Elizabeth II, celebrates two birthdays- November 14, which is his actual birthday, while his official one falls on the second Saturday in June.

Both Cameroon and the UK are members of the Commonwealth.
